MANILA, Philippines — Four people including a pregnant woman died while another was injured in a fire that struck a bakery in Calamba, Laguna at dawn yesterday.
The fatalities, whose identities were not immediately available, were reportedly trapped in a building housing the Redlocks Bakery in Barangay Rea, according to Col. Dennis de Guzman, Calamba City police chief.
The victims were reportedly asleep when the fire broke out at around 3 a.m.
The flames spread to several establishments, fire probers said.
Witnesses and barangay officials told probers that they heard an explosion coming from inside the building before the fire broke out.
Responding firefighters and police officers said the fire was immediately put under control.
Fire probers have yet to determine the cause of the blaze and estimate the amount of damage to property.
