COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Gunmen killed a Moro datu who held a position in the local government unit of Tugunan municipality in the Bangsamoro Special Geographic Area in Cotabato province on Wednesday morning, June 10.

Capt. Steffie Salanguit, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, and officials of the Army's 602nd Infantry Brigade separately told reporters on Wednesday afternoon that Datu Toto Mangansakan Dodog was on board his white pickup truck and approaching the municipal government center in Tugunan when gunmen positioned along the route attacked him.

His assailants immediately fled the scene amid the commotion caused by the gunfire.

Dodog succumbed to the gunshot wounds he sustained in the attack at a hospital where municipal emergency responders brought him for treatment.

Investigators from the Tugunan Municipal Police Station and relatives of Dodog, who belonged to the prominent Mangansakan clan in Cotabato province, said they are looking into the possibility that the attack was related to his work as a senior staff member of their local government unit.

Tugunan is one of the eight newly created municipalities in the Bangsamoro Special Geographic Area under the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, although it is geographically located within Cotabato province in Soccsksargen.
