MANILA, Philippines — The House Committee on Justice on Tuesday, April 14, began its hearing on the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte, with lawmakers set to examine key documents and witness testimonies.

Among those expected to come under scrutiny are the affidavit of alleged Duterte associate Ramil Madriaga, along with records from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Commission on Audit (COA), Department of Education (DepEd) and Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), as ordered in earlier subpoenas.

The panel is also expected to review Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALNs), COA audit documents and other submissions tied to allegations involving confidential fund use.

Lawmakers will determine whether the evidence presented establishes probable cause to elevate the complaints to a plenary vote, which could pave the way for an impeachment trial.

The hearing follows earlier committee proceedings that cited allegations of irregular fund use, questionable acknowledgment receipts, and related testimonies submitted to the House.

Duterte’s camp has denied the allegations and has filed petitions questioning the constitutionality of the impeachment proceedings before the Supreme Court, which has not issued a temporary restraining order.
