MANILA, Philippines — A low-pressure area outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) is showing signs of development and may intensify into a tropical depression by midweek, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said yesterday.
As of 3 p.m., the LPA was located about 1,210 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon.
PAGASA said the weather disturbance could enter PAR by Wednesday morning, with a high likelihood of affecting the central part of the country. Once it develops into a tropical cyclone, it will be named Wilma.
The potential tropical depression is expected to bring scattered to widespread rains starting Thursday, particularly over the Visayas and parts of Southern Luzon and Mindanao. Residents in these areas are advised to be alert for possible flooding and landslides.
Meanwhile, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) continues to influence weather conditions in Mindanao, bringing light to moderate rains over the Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, SOCCSKSARGEN, the Davao Region and parts of Caraga.
Northeastern Luzon is being affected by the northeast monsoon, with light rains or drizzle expected over Batanes and the Babuyan Islands.
Localized thunderstorms may also develop across the rest of the country.
Temperatures in key cities are forecast as follows: Metro Manila, 24 to 32 degrees Celsius; Cebu, 26 to 32 degrees Celsius and Davao, 24 to 32 degrees Celsius.
Sea conditions remain generally calm nationwide, although moderate waves are likely over the seaboards of Northern Luzon. A gale warning may be raised as the northeast monsoon strengthens.
Former Tropical Storm Verbena is no longer affecting the country and was last spotted 425 kilometers northwest of Pag-asa Island as of 3 p.m.
PAGASA urged continuous monitoring as the LPA moves westward toward eastern Visayas, Caraga and potentially Southeastern Luzon by the weekend.
