MANILA, Philippines — In a week-long enforcement sweep, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has impounded nearly 40 vehicles, including 30 high-end luxury cars.
In a statement yesterday, LTO chief Markus Lacanilao said the operation uncovered multiple violations by vehicle owners, including expired or missing registrations and drivers without valid licenses.
These include four Mustangs, two Porsche 911s, three Porsche Cayennes and two BMWs.
“Most of these expensive cars have no registration,” Lacanilao said, adding that there are also Range Rovers and a Jaguar.
He said the crackdown did not single out luxury vehicles.
“We charge ordinary cars, sport utility vehicles, AUVs and vans the same way. As soon as we see a violation, we apprehend the vehicle. Most of these don’t have registration,” Lacanilao said.
He emphasized that LTO enforcement is applied equally to all motorists.
The LTO will coordinate with the Bureau of Customs to verify the registration of the impounded vehicles to streamline verification, Lacanilao said.
Anti-colorum drive
Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) collected P11.8 million in fines after apprehending 24 colorum vehicles during a month-long nationwide enforcement operation in November.
The DOTr-Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation conducted coordinated intelligence-driven inspections that led to the impounding of nine buses, 13 vans and two taxis operating without proper authorization.
Officials said the apprehended vehicles were issued impounding receipts, with fines imposed under existing regulations.
The DOTr said the campaign is part of ongoing efforts to curb unauthorized public transport operations, which it said pose risks to passengers and disrupt regulated transport services.
Authorities said enforcement activities would continue to ensure compliance with transport rules and maintain road safety standards.
