Makati's famed Japanese restaurant, Tsukiji, mourns the loss of their sushi master chef Chef Okajima.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Chef Okajima, beloved Sushi Master Chef of Tsukiji Restaurant," it said on social media late Monday.

"We express our heartfelt gratitude for his contributions, creativity, and the warmth he shared with everyone around him making Tsukiji among Asia’s best restaurants. Chef Okajima’s legacy will live on through the memories he created and the lives he touched. Arigato gozaimasu," Tsukiji added.

'Thank you, Chef Oka, for everything. You are greatly missed," they said.

Hailing from Tokyo Japan, Chef Toshiro Okajima began his career at the Tsujiki Fish Market, first as a buyer of fish and other seafood for a sushi shop, working his way up to become the sushi chef.

He's been at the helm of the sushi counter of Tsukiji for more than 20 years, serving the freshest seafood from the famed seafood market of Tokyo and the rest of the world.

Tsukiji Makati prides itself for being the first "restaurant in Manila to directly buy, import and serve fresh seafood" from Tokyo's Tsukiji Market, after which it was named. It operates on the third floor of the Milky Way Building on Arnaiz Street in Makati.

A favorite joint among discerning Japanese food enthusiasts since 1989, Tsukiji has long been included in many a list of best restaurants in Manila.

Our sincere condolences.
