MANILA, Philippines — The Manila city government has collected P10.8 billion in revenue from July to December, according to Mayor Isko Moreno.

In a year-end report broadcast on Facebook on Tuesday, Moreno recalled the city’s mid-year challenges, including unpaid obligations, garbage backlogs and weakened public trust.

“In less than 72 hours, we put things in the right order and normalized waste collection, cleaning, maintenance and the openness of our old city,” he said.

Through a General Tax Amnesty program, the city also collected P439 million, benefitting more than 24,000 taxpayers.

The improved fiscal position enabled Manila to settle P4.8 billion in prior-year obligations, pay utilities and loans on time and continue education and social protection programs.

“In just six months, we released over P167 million for education and more than P629 million for senior citizens,” Moreno said.

Renewed investor confidence was evident in increased business applications, permits issued, jobs created and private sector investments, he said.

Road clearing, drainage rehabilitation, lighting projects and public safety measures have been part of efforts to improve conditions across the city, according to Moreno.

Health services were expanded, including the opening of Baseco Hospital and Manila’s first cardiac catheterization laboratory.

High-cost diagnostics and procedures are now free in city-run hospitals.
