MANILA, Philippines — To combat malnutrition among schoolchildren, the Manila city government launched yesterday a feeding program that would provide milk to over 21,000 pre-schoolers enrolled in the city’s public day care centers.
Mayor Isko Moreno and Vice Mayor Chi Atienza led the launching of “Yormilk: Kaagapay ng Batang Maynila sa Paglaki” in Tondo.
Up to 21,651 children will receive milk three times a week for 90 days, Moreno said.
The program will be implemented through child development centers in 436 barangays.
City hall said the milk would be sourced from local producers.
The program is being implemented in coordination with the Department of Health, National Dairy Authority and partner cooperatives.
Based on data from the Manila Department of Social Welfare, 1,593 “wasted” and “severely wasted” pupils are enrolled in the city’s 467 child development centers.
Wasted and severely wasted children are those who have very low weight for their height, indicating acute malnutrition.
