CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — A day after his appointment, Highway Patrol Group (HPG) director Brig. Gen. Hanzel Marantan yesterday assumed as acting chief of the Calabarzon police.

Marantan replaced Brig. Gen. Paul Kenneth Lucas, who handled the post for three years.

Lucas was appointed chief of the Special Action Force, replacing Maj. Gen. Mark Pespes.

Marantan was replaced in the HPG by Brig. Gen. Jessie Tamayao, executive officer of the Directorate for Police Community Relations.

Retired police Brig. Gen. James Melad, who is also a former chief of the Calabarzon police, congratulated Marantan on his new appointment.

Melad was Marantan’s former superior in the police special operations group.

In Nueva Ecija, Col. Ritchie Claraval assumed as provincial police director following a turnover ceremony attended by his predecessor, Col. Heryl Bruno, and Central Luzon police director Brig. Gen. Jess Mendez.
