MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos yesterday visited Negros Oriental to continue the implementation of government programs aimed at supporting scholars and local projects as well as address hunger.

Marcos led the ceremonial turnover of P20,000 financial assistance to 250 scholars from Dumaguete City and the towns of Valencia and Bacong.

The scholarship, financed through the socio-civic projects fund of the Bawat Barangay Makikinabang program, is seen to benefit 2,785 scholars from 557 barangays in the province.

“I told the scholars, I hope they will benefit from it so they can finish their studies. Education is a different kind of blessing... It cannot be taken away from you,” Marcos said.

The socio-civic projects fund allocates P200,000 to each barangay. Half of the amount is intended to support five scholars per barangay while the remaining P100,000 is earmarked for local projects and efforts to boost the delivery of basic services.

Also yesterday, Marcos witnessed the distribution of 10 kilos of rice each to 2,230 beneficiaries from Barangay Talay in Dumaguete. He also visited the Army’s 302nd Infantry Brigade at Camp Leon Kilat in Tanjay.

The President emphasized the Army’s role in maintaining security and addressing challenges in their area of responsibility, as he urged the troops to boost their civil-military operations, capability to address security issues and coordination with the national and local governments.
