Singapore PMO

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to travel to Singapore for a three-day working visit starting Tuesday, July 14 through July 16.

Palace press officer Claire Castro said Monday, July 13, that Marcos is expected to make a courtesy call on Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during the visit.

Castro said the two leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation on trade and investment, environment and health, and regional and global development.

The visit also comes as the Philippines prepares to pass the ASEAN chairmanship to Singapore next year.

Economic pitch

On Marcos' agenda in Singapore is a meeting with business leaders at a private roundtable discussion organized by the multinational think tank Milken Institute, following the Philippines' recent reclassification as an upper-middle-income country by the World Bank.

The Philippines moved from lower-middle-income to upper-middle-income status in the World Bank's latest country income classifications, citing broad-based economic expansion.

First lady Liza Araneta-Marcos is also expected to deliver remarks at the Global Economic Cooperation East Summit.

Castro said the first lady was invited by the Future Economic Cooperation Council, a platform that convenes business, government and policy leaders.

Recent Canada trip. The Singapore visit comes days after Marcos returned from Canada, where Malacañang said the Philippines secured $2.5 billion in investments from Canadian business partners.

The Philippines and Canada also elevated their relations to a strategic partnership during the visit.

Marcos is expected to return to the Philippines on Thursday, July 16.
