MANILA, Philippines — From arrest enabler to reconciler?

The Marcos administration seemed to have played both roles in the life of former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is now detained in The Hague for alleged crimes against humanity emanating from his drug war.

According to Vice President Sara Duterte, there was forgiveness between her and the former president for all that happened in their lives, even thanking President Marcos for their renewed father-daughter relationship.

The Vice President, an ally-turned-arch critic of the administration, told reporters last Tuesday that she and her father had time to talk about their family since they could no longer discuss legal matters.

What was President Marcos’ response?

“Glad I could help,” the President was quoted by Palace press officer Claire Castro as saying yesterday.

In a press briefing at Malacañang, Castro said the Vice President should thank her father because without his actions that stemmed from his anti-drug campaign, they would not have the opportunity to bond in The Hague.

“She had the opportunity to spend some time with her father because of the EJK (extrajudicial killings) case. If the actions related to the war on drugs were not undertaken and if nobody complained, she would not have a chance to go to The Hague,” Castro said.

The former president is detained in The Hague, charged with alleged crimes against humanity stemming from his bloody war on drugs.
