MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos yesterday visited Bataan to inspect newly installed prefabricated classrooms, one of the government measures aimed at addressing the country’s classroom shortage.
The prefabricated classrooms at Mariveles National High School-Alasasin Annex serve as a practical interim solution while permanent school buildings are being built, according to Education Secretary Sonny Angara.
“The design is good... We even inspected their manufacturing method. It is good because it is durable,” Marcos told reporters after his inspection.
The modular support classrooms were finished in less than two weeks, the Presidential Communications Office said in a statement.
The classrooms can accommodate 1,031 students of the school, which is seen to have a shortage of at least five classrooms because of an expected rise in enrollment.
“What’s important is that we are able to provide our students with proper classrooms more quickly. While we address long-term classroom needs, there are immediate solutions so that children no longer have to be crowded,” Angara said.
During the event, Marcos also observed the use of the Xepto Learning Management System and witnessed the turnover of learning tablets by the provincial government of Bataan to the school.
He also led the distribution of digital learning devices and the rollout of the YAKAP at Kalinga Caravan, a joint initiative of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) and the education department that provided students and school personnel free medical consultations, laboratory services, medicines and vision screening.
“If you remember the P60-billion transferred to the budget, we returned the P60 billion. So now, PhilHealth has (an) additional P60 billion so we can expand the programs. We have to accelerate all of these because of the oil crisis that is happening,” Marcos said.
The President also visited the prefabricated plant Corner Stone Corp. in Barangay Alasasin, also in Mariveles.
