MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos yesterday led the groundbreaking of a South Korean company complex engaged in manufacturing farm equipment in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija.

The Korea Agricultural Machinery Industry Complex (KAMIC) is expected to boost local farm mechanization and productivity, and lessen reliance on imported equipment. It is the first large-scale agricultural machinery factory complex in the country.

Marcos said that KAMIC’s advanced machinery would modernize local farm operations and ease farmers’ labor.

“The KAMIC is the first agricultural machinery production complex in the country. Its purpose is to strengthen our capacity to develop and build farm machinery,” Marcos said in a speech at the Kalikid Golf Course in Cabanatuan City.

Designed based on the Philippine farming setting, Marcos said machines help increase production, improve crop quality and raise the income of local farmers.

“Gone are the days when our farmers will have to wait for the parts for their equipment. No more overpriced equipment. No more farmers left behind in farming technology,” he said. “The importance of mechanization in agriculture cannot be overstressed.”

Marcos thanked South Korea for investing in the Philippines and assured officials that the government would protect their investments.

“To our Korean partners, thank you for believing that the Philippines is worth investing in. Thank you also for trusting the Filipino farmer and for taking part in our shared progress,” he said.

Present at the event were South Korean Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa; Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Deputy Minister Jung Ho Kim, and Korea Agriculture Industry Cooperative chairman Shin Gil Kim as well as Speaker Faustino Dy III, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and Cabanatuan Mayor Myca Vergara.

With a total investment of $100 million, the KAMIC will be constructed on a 20-hectare government-owned property in Barangay Kalikid Sur.

The factory will assemble and manufacture agricultural machinery such as tractors and seeders based on the Philippine farm setting.

During the event, Marcos distributed agricultural inputs and machinery to farmers in Central Luzon.
