MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos will attend the 46th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from May 26 to 27, Malacañang announced yesterday.

“Expect the President to come and attend the said ASEAN Summit,” Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said at a press briefing.

During a phone call on Friday, Marcos and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim discussed the Trump administration’s tariff policy and the ceasefire in Myanmar.

Castro said the two leaders are expected to continue their discussions on economic and security issues during the summit in Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar told Marcos that Malaysia, as this year’s ASEAN chair, can leverage its position to demonstrate its significance to the US in global tariff negotiations.

Anwar also informed Marcos of Malaysia’s call for an extension of the ceasefire in Myanmar to ensure humanitarian aid would reach the affected population.

The Myanmar junta, which ousted the democratically elected government, has been prohibited from joining ASEAN summits since 2022. The Philippines has replaced Myanmar as the summit’s host next year.
