MANILA, Philippines — To ensure the continued education of learners even during disasters, President Marcos and Education Secretary Sonny Angara yesterday turned over the learning continuity space or LCS facilities in Bogo City in Cebu, which was hit by a 6.9-magnitude earthquake last year.
In a statement, the Department of Education (DepEd) said the LCS was given to the Marcelo B. Fernan-Polambato Elementary School, where at least 20 classrooms were damaged by the quake.
Angara said a similar facility was constructed at Binabag Elementary School, also in Bogo.
The project forms part of the 1,134 LCS units to be constructed for 51,000 students nationwide.
Built using durable steel structures, the LCS is equipped with a solar power supply, internet connection and a comfort room in every unit.
Each modular classroom costs about P1.65 million and can accommodate 40 students.
Angara said the climate-resilient structures, which can be installed within two weeks, represent the administration’s proactive stance on school safety and recovery.
He said the initiative would directly address the disruption of classes for learners during calamities.
Angara cited the experiences of students at Paniqui National High School, Calolod Elementary School, Electo T. Verano Elementary School, B. Titong High School, Asid Integrated School and Luy-a Elementary School – all in Masbate – that were given the LCS facilities earlier.
“This project reflects the marching orders of President Marcos to ensure that no Filipino learner is left behind, even in the face of the most challenging calamities,” Angara said.
During the visit in Bogo, Marcos interacted with the students and teachers holding classes in the newly constructed LCS.
The President was joined by First Lady Liza Marcos, Angara and Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro in Bogo.
Later in the day, Marcos attended the promotion ceremony of 3,300 teachers and principals in Cebu City.
“For you, teaching is not just a job, but a vocation, a sacred duty. Because of this, I have a high level of admiration and respect for you,” Marcos said. — Alexis Romero
