Maria Ressa to narrate ‘Peter and the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood’ of Repertory PH

Described as an 'extraordinary voice for an extraordinary tale,' Ressa is announced as one of the narrators for Repertory Philippines’ upcoming musical theater production this August

MANILA, Philippines – Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Rappler CEO Maria Ressa is stepping into the world of musical theater!

Ressa has been named as one of the narrators for Repertory Philippines’ upcoming musical theater production Peter and the Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood, which will run in August.

Repertory Philippines announced Ressa’s role on Instagram on Wednesday, July 23, describing her as “an extraordinary voice for an extraordinary tale.”

“We are immensely proud to announce that global icon Maria Ressa will grace our stage as the narrator for Peter and the Wolf! Her dedication to a thriving information ecosystem and her work as a Professor of Practice at Columbia University uniquely qualify her to bring depth to this beloved narrative,” the theater company said.

“Let Maria Ressa’s voice transport you into the heart of the story,” they added. This double-bill production will see “three masters unite to unleash a spellbinding night where fairytales breathe, hunt, and dance.”

Repertory Philippines, Ballet Philippines, and the Manila Symphony Orchestra have collaborated to combine Peter and the Wolf, written by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, with Camille Saint-Saëns’ and Edvard Grieg’s full-length ballet Little Red Riding Hood.

The former tale has each character represented by an instrument: the bird by a flute, the duck by an oboe, the cat by a clarinet, the grandfather by a bassoon, the wolf by horns, and Peter by the strings, while the latter is described as a “playful reimagination of the Charles Perrault classic about a little girl who discovers the power of kindness.”

Joining Ressa as narrators are media personality Tim Yap, who began his career on the REP stage in Lost in Yonkers, and singer–actress Karylle Tatlonghari, known for her standout roles in musicals like Carousel.

The production also serves a community outreach initiative, with select seats offered free to families from underserved barangays. Proceeds from premium tickets will help fund future outreach efforts of Repertory Philippines.

Shows will be held at The Theatre at Solaire, Asean Avenue, Entertainment City, Parañaque City, on August 1, 8 pm for gala night; August 2 at 2 pm and 7 pm; and on August 3 at 2 pm and 7 pm.

Tickets can be purchased via TicketWorld and at Solaire Box Office Level 2. Updates and show schedules can be viewed on the Repertory Philippines website. – Rappler.com
