MANILA, Philippines — National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag has asked the House prosecution panel to allow him to testify earlier in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte after he was invited by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to attend a law enforcement summit in Thailand this month.
In a letter to House lead prosecutor Rep. Gerville Luistro dated July 10, Matibag said the FBI, in coordination with the Royal Thai police, invited the NBI to the inaugural regional summit on scam center compounds and transnational organized crime, to be held in Bangkok from July 21 to 22.
Matibag said he would personally represent the NBI at the gathering of law enforcement officials from across the Asia-Pacific region.
The NBI chief said he remains available to testify on any earlier date that may be set by the House prosecution panel.
Matibag is expected to testify on the alleged threats made by Duterte against President Marcos, First Lady Liza Marcos and former House speaker Martin Romualdez.
