MANILA, Philippines — State seismologists at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded more than 270 earthquakes in the Mayon Volcano on Saturday, March 14.

In an advisory on Sunday, March 15, Phivolcs said that it had logged 279 volcanic earthquakes from 12 a.m. on Saturday to 12 a.m. on Sunday, along with three pyroclastic density current signals.

As of writing, Alert Level 3 is still in effect for the volcano.

A total of 2,430 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux was also observed being emitted by the Mayon Volcano.

According to the state seismologists, lava effusion has been observed along the Basud, Bonga, and Mi-isi gullies, with the longest flow extending 3.8 kilometers and showing signs of intermittent, low-level Strombolian eruptions.

The edifice of the volcano is also observed as “inflated,” while there is also a “fair” crater glow.

Access to the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone remains strictly prohibited. Authorities are cautioned against flying in close proximity to the volcano.

Phivolcs has also identified several potential threats, including rockfalls, landslides, and ballistic fragments.

Additionally, state seismologists warned of lava flows, pyroclastic density currents, and the high risk of “lahars” triggered by intense or persistent rainfall.
