THE Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association Inc. (MDPPA), a consortium of major Japanese motorcycle manufacturers — Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and new member TVS Philippines — reported a 7 percent increase in motorcycle sales for 2024.

MDPPA members recorded 1,682,482 wholesale sales in 2024, the highest in five years, up from 1,577,597 in 2023.

Sales in 2022 and 2021 were 1.56 million and 1.43 million units, respectively. The pre-pandemic 2019 peak remains at 1.7 million units.

"Despite industry challenges, our 7 percent growth in 2024 is the highest in Asean," said MDPPA President Alex Cumpas. "Indonesia and Malaysia saw only 2 percent growth. We are optimistic that 2025 could surpass 2019's record."

Cumpas attributed this optimism to the upcoming national election, favorable economic conditions, and supportive motorcycle industry legislation. MDPPA forecasts 5 percent growth for 2025.

The automatic category dominates sales at 64 percent, followed by business units (17 percent) and mopeds (16.3 percent). Street and big bikes account for 2.7 percent.

MDPPA continues its "Tropang MAALAM" campaign, promoting responsible riding, road safety, and motorcycle maintenance.

"The motorcycle industry remains resilient. As we enter 2025, we prioritize safety, innovation, and sustainability," said Cumpas. "With industry and government support, we aim to surpass 2019's sales and create a safer, smarter future for riders."
