MANILA, Philippines — Property giant Megaworld Corp. is going all in on its transition to clean energy sources.

Megaworld said it has fully shifted all of its company-owned offices, hotels, lifestyle malls and residential properties to 100 percent renewable energy.

Covered are 54 commercial properties owned by the company and listed under its real estate investment trust, MREIT Inc.

The properties include 26 office towers, 15 lifestyle malls and retail establishments as well as eight hotels located in Uptown Bonifacio, Eastwood City, McKinley Hill, McKinley West, Newport City, Southwoods City, Twin Lakes, Boracay Newcoast and Iloilo Business Park.

Several residential properties in Uptown Bonifacio and Forbes Town in Taguig, Westside City in Parañaque and Makati have likewise shifted fully to renewable energy.

The properties are classified as contestable customers or establishments that consume 500 kilowatts or more of electricity.

Under the Retail Competition and Open Access framework, contestable customers can choose to source their electricity from licensed retail energy suppliers offering renewable energy solutions.

Megaworld entered into a partnership with MPower, a subsidiary of Meralco, in March 2024 to begin the transition of its company-owned properties to 100 percent renewable energy sources.

The company has also tapped Ayala’s ACEN as one of its providers of renewable energy solutions for its residential and office properties.

Aside from contestable properties, Megaworld said that non-contestable properties, including those under its subsidiaries and joint ventures, are also targeted to shift to renewable energy by 2030.

Megaworld head of sustainability Jose Arnulfo Batac said that reaching 100 percent renewable energy for all of the company’s properties is a significant leap forward in its sustainability journey.

“This milestone underscores Megaworld’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and we are fully committed to extending these efforts to all our developments as we work toward building townships of the future powered by fully sustainable energy sources,” Batac said.

According to Megaworld, the initiative is part of its broader sustainability program launched in 2023 called MEGreen, which consolidates all environmental efforts under a unified platform aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Megaworld is one of the largest real estate companies in the country, with total assets amounting to almost half a trillion pesos as of end-March.

The company has 35 townships across the country, backed by a robust land bank of around 7,000 hectares.

Megaworld is on track to launch more township developments this year as part of its continued expansion to the provinces.
