PCO
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. swore in former Interior Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento as the new chief of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity on Wednesday, April 22.
Sarmiento replaced Carlito Galvez Jr., who stepped down from the post to spend more time with his family, according to Malacañang.
As peace adviser, Sarmiento will lead efforts to advance inclusive peace initiatives, strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders and sustain programs promoting unity and development in conflict-affected and vulnerable communities.
He previously served as secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government under the late President Benigno Aquino III from September 2015 to June 2016.
The Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process was established in 1993 and was renamed the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity in 2021, expanding its mandate to oversee the comprehensive peace process and promote national reconciliation and unity.
