MANILA, Philippines — Vivian Que-Azcona, president of the iconic Filipino pharmacy chain Mercury Drug, has died at the age of 69.
Vivian, daughter of the late Mariano Que, founder of the Mercury Drug chain, passed away on April 5, 2025. Her cause of death was not disclosed.
Born on Sept. 1, 1955, Vivian and her siblings were a mainstay in the Forbes Philippines’ 50 Richest list over the past decade. Vivian and her siblings ranked No. 24 on the list in 2024.
Vivian has cemented her legacy as a partner of health and wellness in the country through Mercury Drug, which opened its first store on March 1, 1945 along Bambang St. in Manila
Mercury Drug, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, has since expanded its presence nationwide as part of its continuing commitment to help keep the nation healthy.
Vivian graduated cum laude in Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Santo Tomas. She joined Mercury Drug initially as a staff assistant and eventually took over the role of president in 1998.
Under her leadership, Mercury Drug received numerous recognitions. The pharmacy chain has also significantly expanded its store network and enhanced its services.
Vivian had attributed the success of Mercury Drug over the years to its millions of loyal customers, who, she said, inspires the company to serve better every day.
Philippine pharmaceutical company Unilab Group described Vivian as a visionary leader and a dedicated partner who has left an indelible mark on the Mercury Group of Companies, the health care industry and the country.
“The Unilab Group extend our heartfelt condolences on the untimely passing of Ms. Vivian Que-Azcona, president of Mercury Group of Companies. We believe her meaningful work uplifted millions of lives through the years, leaving a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come,” the group said.
“Ms. Que-Azcona lived with purpose and passion, ensuring only the best healthcare is accessible to Filipinos. We are grateful of the longstanding partnership with the Mercury Group of Companies for 80 years and for the privilege of having worked alongside Ms. Que-Azcona, whose integrity and care for Filipinos have been an inspiration for those around her,” it said.
