From grandly silhouetted suit ensembles to dramatic plays on texture, these looks redefined what dandyism means today
Every first Monday in May, the world’s gaze turns to New York—specifically, the Metropolitan Museum of Art—as personalities from various fields put on their finest garb for a cause. The museum’s annual fundraising event, the Met Gala, benefits its Costume Institute. This season, it unveils a new exhibition titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity,” the exhibition highlights a historically overshadowed and marginalized fashion movement led by Black men throughout history.
To celebrate the exhibition, the Met Gala invited guests to showcase their best interpretations of the dress code, “Tailored For You.” From modern takes on dandyism to playful twists on menswear, here are some of the standout looks we saw on the museum steps.
