MANILA, Philippines — Metro Pacific Water (MPW) has allocated P3.81 billion to fund infrastructure projects and system upgrade in Dumaguete and Iloilo, to ensure water supply ahead of the incoming dry season.

“We recognize that demand continues to grow at a time when traditional water sources are becoming increasingly strained due to extreme climate conditions. These investments are being made today so our customers will not have to bear the burden of shortages tomorrow,” MPW president and CEO Andrew Pangilinan said in a statement.

MPW will allocate the funds for the installment of new pipelines, replacement of aging and undersized pipes, along with the construction of building 86,073 new water service connections.

The company said that this would provide more households with accessible water.

It is also implementing non-revenue water (NRW) reduction projects, which could minimize leaks, illegal connections and further system losses. This would enable the improvement of water pressure, strengthen services and increase operational efficiencies.

MPW said that it would accelerate the rollout of alternative water source projects to diversify its supply during the incoming period of extreme heat and reduced rainfall.

It added that projects include the construction of desalination facilities which convert saltwater into potable water of up to 65 million liters per day.

The company will also establish modular water treatment plants that are capable of producing five million liters per day of clean water from sources within or nearby the cities.

“Through these strategic investments in infrastructure modernization and supply augmentation, we are strengthening the reliability of our systems and safeguarding access to clean and adequate water for our customers even as the El Niño season approaches,” Pangilinan added.

The company now serves more than 860,000 people across Iloilo City and Dumaguete.
