Production in Laguna starts in 2028

MANILA, Philippines — Japanese automotive firm Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is planning to manufacture a new hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) model at its plant in Laguna by 2028.

In a statement, the automotive firm said it announced its intention to participate in the Philippine government’s electric vehicle promotion program, the Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS) during a meeting between President Marcos and Mitsubishi Motors CEO Takao Kato.

Subject to the approval of its EVIS application, the plan involves the production of a new HEV model at Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC)’s plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna by the middle of next year.

Under the proposed EVIS being developed by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the government will provide fiscal and non-fiscal incentives to encourage the local production of EVs, batteries, motors and components, as well the deployment of charging stations and testing facilities.

As part of the planned production of a new HEV model, MMPC is planning to make additional investments, including enhancements to its facilities to support electrification.

The additional investment is expected to help expand the local supply chain.

It will also create additional employment opportunities.

“The Philippines has long been one of our most important markets, where we have engaged in production and sales for many years,” Kato said.

“In cooperation with the Philippine government, we are honored to contribute to the advancement of vehicle electrification and industrial development through the EVIS program, as well as to support the further growth of the Philippine economy,” he added.

Earlier, MMPC took part in the government’s Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy program, which offered incentives to encourage investments in local vehicle manufacturing.

At present, MMPC manufactures the Mirage, Mirage G4 and L300.

Through the EVIS, the government aims to encourage EV adoption and narrow the cost gap between electric and traditional motor vehicles.

Earlier, the DTI said it expects the EVIS to create around 680,000 jobs and yield P11.4 trillion in economic output.

The DTI also expects the EVIS to generate P400 billion in tax revenue and allow the country to save up to $30 billion in foreign exchange through reduced dependence on imported vehicles and parts.
