MANILA, Philippines — Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) is anticipating strong demand for sports utility vehicles (SUVs) to drive the shift to electrified vehicles as it launched its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in the country.

The firm launched the Outlander PHEV SUV, the brand’s first PHEV in the Philippines on Thursday night.

MMPC said that the country’s rainy season is helping drive demand for vehicles with higher ground clearance, particularly SUVs.

“This could support stronger demand for electrified SUVs compared with electrified sedans, as SUVs provide greater confidence and practicality when navigating flooded or uneven roads,” MMPC said.

MMPC’s newly launched Outlander is Japan’s best-selling PHEV in the SUV segment.

MMPC president Ritsu Imaeda said that “the all-new Outlander PHEV represents Mitsubishi’s continued leadership in electrified SUV technology.”

The automotive firm’s target market for the Outlander PHEV are those in the 40 to 50 years old age group or corporate executives, professionals and business owners.

MMPC said that the vehicle is ideal for those living in houses or condos that allow dedicated home charging.

The new Outlander PHEV addresses range anxiety by engaging the gasoline engine when additional power or extended driving range is needed.

It also offers the driver full control over switching multiple EV drive modes such as normal, save, charge and EV priority.

When there are no charging facilities available, the new Outlander PHEV SUV continues to operate efficiently as an HEV to ensure uninterrupted mobility.

Available in the colors White Diamond, Red Diamond and Black Diamond, the new Outlander PHEV retails for P2.848 million.

Customers who make reservations until Sept. 30, will enjoy the special introductory pricing of P2.749 million.

Earlier, MMPC said it plans to start producing an HEV at its plant in Sta.Rosa, Laguna by 2028.

The automotive firm also wants the Philippines to serve as an export hub for HEVs.
