The new traffic policy coincides with the partial closure of portions of EDSA for rehabilitation work
MANILA, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will implement an odd-even number coding scheme along EDSA beginning Monday, June 16.
Under the scheme, vehicles with plate numbers ending in odd digits (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) will be barred from using EDSA on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Those with plate numbers ending in even digits (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) will be restricted on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
There will be no coding on Sundays.
During the one-week dry run, violators will receive tickets but won’t be fined yet, said MMDA Chairman Don Artes.
The new traffic policy coincides with the partial closure of portions of EDSA for rehabilitation work. Among the priorities in the rehabilitation are the EDSA bus lane and the southbound lane. The government aims to complete the EDSA rehabilitation by 2027.
During the rehabilitation, provincial buses and trucks are only allowed on EDSA from 5 am to 10 pm, according to the MMDA.
To help ease expected congestion and promote public transport use, Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said that additional buses along the EDSA Carousel and more MRT trains will be deployed.
Dizon also assured the public that the operations of the EDSA Bus Carousel will not be halted by the rehabilitation.
Toll fees will also be waived for the Skyway Stage 3 segment serving as a detour, Dizon said.
The MMDA also committed to clearing alternate routes of any obstructions. – Rappler.com
