MANILA, Philippines —  Following a directive from President Marcos to adopt energy-saving protocols amid soaring oil prices, several local government units in Metro Manila have implemented a four-day workweek schedule and other power conservation measures. In Quezon City, the local government said it would adopt a four-day workweek to conserve energy.

City hall said it would implement a work-from-home arrangement every Monday for non-frontline departments and employees.

Basic and essential services will remain fully operational from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The city government’s services should never be impeded. Even with the implementation of a one-day work-from-home arrangement for administrative and clerical employees, our programs and services will remain available to our residents,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

She also reiterated the local government’s call to residents to maximize the city’s digital services.

“It is high time for the public to fully utilize the digital services we have put in place to make government transactions faster, easier and more accessible,” Belmonte said.

According to the city government, all internal meetings will be conducted virtually. On-site seminars and training activities will be postponed until further notice.

In San Juan, Mayor Francis Zamora signed an order implementing a four-day workweek starting on Monday.

City government personnel will report on-site from Monday to Thursday. A work-from-home setup will be enforced every Friday.

Frontline offices are exempted from the work-from-home arrangement to ensure uninterrupted public service.

Personnel of the Marikina government have started reporting for work from Monday to Thursday to conserve energy and cut fuel use.

Mayor Marjorie Ann Teodoro signed Executive Order 05 implementing a four-day workweek.

Local government offices are open from Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. City hall is closed every Friday.

In Malabon, Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said the implementation of a four-day work policy was in response to the national government’s call to conserve energy.

Valenzuela City introduced additional energy-saving initiatives, including the deployment of e-patrol vehicles for the city police.

Mayor Wes Gatchalian said the city acquired 35 electric vehicles, patrol motorcycles and police vehicles to modernize law enforcement operations and reduce fuel consumption.
