MANILA, Philippines — At least three more candidates in Quezon City and Laguna are facing disqualification complaints before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for various alleged offenses.
In Quezon City, registered voter Ligaya Sta. Ana filed a formal complaint against businesswoman Rose Lin, who is running for Congress in the city’s 5th legislative district. Lin allegedly conducted campaign activities during Maundy Thursday, despite a Comelec prohibition.
“Despite the unequivocal legal ban, Rose Lin openly conducted partisan campaign,” Sta. Ana said in the petition.
The complainant alleged that Lin’s campaign workers erected a red tent and distributed refreshments, which constitute vote buying.
The complainant asked the Comelec to disqualify Lin from the congressional race and suspend her proclamation in case she wins.
In Laguna, husband-and-wife Gov. Ramil Hernandez and 2nd district Rep. Ruth Hernandez are both under scrutiny for alleged abuse of state resources and vote-buying activities.
The Laguna governor reportedly distributed health cards with names of voters and government insignia as well as P2,000 during a campaign sortie.
His wife allegedly disbursed public funds disguised as social welfare benefits without approval from the poll body, according to a complaint filed with the Comelec.
The couple is eyeing to swap seats this election, as Ramil guns for the 2nd district congressional position, and Ruth the provincial seat.
Meanwhile, Pangasinan 6th district Rep. Marlyn Primicias-Agabas has filed separate complaints before the Comelec and the Philippine National Police (PNP) over alleged massive, coordinated vote-buying operations being carried out in the municipalities of Rosales, Balungao and Asingan.
In letters to Comelec Chairman George Garcia and PNP chief Gen.Rommel Marbil dated April 29, Agabas cited reports that political leaders associated with her opponent, Gilbert Estrella are allegedly distributing P3,000 per voter.
Reelectionist Pampanga 4th district Rep. Anna York Bondoc urged the Comelec to place three Pampanga towns under its control due to persistent threats, acts of violence and political instability.
In her April 23 letter addressed to Garcia, Bondoc identified the towns of Masantol, Apalit and Sto. Tomas – which are under the lawmaker’s jurisdiction. – Jose Rodel Clapano, Ric Sapnu
