MANILA, Philippines — Singer Morissette will play Middle Allie in the stage adaptation of "The Notebook" when the musical makes its international premiere in Manila later this year.

The "Akin Ka Na Lang" singer will take on the role played on the big screen by Rachel McAdams when the international production runs in September at Makati's Samsung Performing Arts Theater.

"The Notebook: The Musical" will open Theatre Group Asia's (TGA) 2026-2027 season.

It is an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' novel, with music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson and a Tony-nominated book by Bekah Brunstetter.

The musical debuted in 2022 at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater under the direction of Michael Greif and Schele Williams, before moving to Broadway, where it received three Tony nominations.

The story was popularized worldwide by the 2004 film starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling as Allie and Noah.

In this musical, the two central characters' story shows Noah and Allie across multiple stages of their lives.

Morissette returns to theater

"Casting Middle Allie is a tough process because the character's songs are as technically challenging as they are emotionally demanding. It takes a special kind of vocalist and actress to tackle this role. And we're overjoyed Morissette welcomed the prospect. She's spectacular!" said TGA's overall artistic and creative director Clint Ramos.

Morissette said her return to the stage comes at the "perfect time," as she had been considering going back to theater.

"I loved the film adaptation, and the songs from the musical are so beautiful and moving," she said.

Morissette previously appeared in the Philippine production of "Camp Rock: The Musical" in 2012.

She was also among the first performers to appear at Circuit's Blackbox Theater in "The Mister Kupido Musical" in 2015.

Last year was a milestone year for Morisette as she celebrated her 15th anniversary solo concert with "Ember" and her film debut in "Song of the Fireflies," earning Best Actress at the Manila International Film Festival.
