MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has proclaimed Naga City in Camarines Sur as a highly urbanized city, Mayor Leni Robredo announced yesterday.
Robredo made the announcement during the commemoration of the 68th birth anniversary of her late husband, Jesse Robredo, who served as Naga mayor prior to his appointment as head of the Department of the Interior and Local Government in 2010.
Under the Local Government Code, cities with a minimum population of 200,000 and an annual income of P50 million based on 1991 constant prices are classified as highly urbanized cities.
Based on a city council resolution passed earlier this year, Naga – currently an independent component city – has a population of 209,170 as of 2020, and its annual income has surpassed P1 billion since 2016.
The resolution, which called for national government recognition of the city’s status, formally initiated Naga’s bid for its declaration as a highly urbanized city.
“The conferment of HUC status marks a historic chapter for Naga City, reflecting its sustained growth and development as well as the enduring legacy of leadership that has shaped its governance,” the city government said in a statement.
