MANILA, Philippines — Nearly three million passengers benefited from the government’s free train rides during the 12-day Christmas period in December, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.
In a statement, the DOTr said LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 served a combined 2,841,788 passengers under its “12 Days of Christmas – Libreng Sakay” program, which ran from December 14 to December 25.
According to the DOTr on December 26, MRT-3 recorded 1,183,950 commuters during the program, making it the most utilized rail line. This was followed by LRT-1 with 1,091,951 passengers, and LRT-2 with 565,887.
The agency said the highest single-day turnout was recorded on Christmas Day, when more than 835,000 commuters availed themselves of free rides across all three rail lines.
The second-highest volume was logged on December 18, with 550,138 passengers.
Sector-based rollout. The DOTr said the program followed a structured schedule that prioritized different sectors on designated dates.
Beneficiaries included students, senior citizens, overseas Filipino workers, and healthcare professionals.
The free rides also covered members of the LGBTQIA+ community, solo parents, domestic workers, and government and private sector employees.
Uniformed personnel and veterans were also included, with the program culminating in a final day when free rides were made available to all commuters.
