BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The provincial government of Negros Occidental has resumed shipping hogs to Iloilo after no new cases of African swine fever (ASF) were detected within at least 50 days.
In an executive order, the provincial government of Iloilo allowed the entry of hogs from areas in Negros Occidental that recorded no ASF cases within the period.
The Bureau of Animal Industry earlier classified Silay City and San Enrique in Negros Occidental as ASF red zones.
No new hog mortalities have been reported across the province since the first week of August, according to Placeda Lemana, chief of the provincial veterinary office
Lemana said affected local government units that met the required condition may be downgraded from red to yellow zone.
Aside from Iloilo and other areas in Panay, Negros Occidental also ships hogs to Manila, Lemana said.
Although the hog shipment has resumed, the provincial veterinary office continues to conduct surveillance and monitoring for possible ASF cases.
Hog raisers have been urged to strengthen biosecurity measures and avoid overcrowding, especially during periods of unfavorable weather as this may increase the risk of the spread of the virus.
