MANILA, Philippines — A Nepali tagged in a plot to assassinate ranking government officials in his country has been arrested in Malolos, Bulacan, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported yesterday.
In a statement, BI-Fugitive Search Unit chief Rendel Ryan Sy said that Prakash Pathak, 33, was collared by a joint team of the police and BI agents in Barangay Catmon on Dec. 31.
Pathak’s arrest was based on information provided by the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime (PCTC), notifying the BI that an arrest warrant has been issued against the suspect by the Kathmandu District Court for criminal breach of trust.
An Interpol Diffusion Notice was issued against Pathak on Dec. 12 for extortion and conspiracy, the BI said.
“We have been monitoring the movement of the Nepalese fugitive since he arrived in the Philippines in August. He was reportedly one of the organizers of a riot called Gen Z protest in Nepal. After the riot, he departed and hid in the Philippines,” Sy said.
He said Pathak had managed to elude authorities for some time, and often posts his propaganda on social media.
Investigation showed the suspect was linked to serious security-related activities abroad.
Based on official information received by the BI, Pathak is allegedly a part of a conspiracy to assassinate ranking Nepal government officials.
Records showed that Pathak arrived in the country on Aug. 18 and was authorized to stay until Dec. 18.
