MANILA, Philippines — Nestlé Philippines Inc. has voluntarily recalled limited batches of its NAN OPTIPRO and NANKID OPTIPRO infant formula products due to a potential contamination risk linked to an ingredient supplied by a third party.
In a statement, Nestlé Philippines said the recall is being undertaken as a “precautionary measure,” stressing that no illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the affected products.
The company said it is coordinating closely with the Food and Drug Administration to facilitate the nationwide recall.
Nestlé Philippines explained that the move was taken “out of an abundance of caution and in line with its strict product quality and safety protocols.”
“This precautionary approach reflects Nestlé Philippines’ uncompromising commitment to product quality and food safety, as well as strength of our quality, traceability and monitoring systems, which enable us to act responsibly, even in the absence of confirmed health impacts,” the company said Friday.
“We understand this news may cause concern, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We are committed to transparency and are here to support every parent and caregiver throughout this process. The wellbeing of infants is at the heart of everything we do,” it added.
The Philippines is among more than 50 countries covered by a global voluntary recall of certain Nestlé infant formula products.
Nearly a week ago, Nestlé issued a global recall advisory after detecting that some batches may have been contaminated with cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus, which can cause foodborne illness.
According to the advisory, the possible source of contamination was arachidonic acid oil supplied to Nestlé.
“The presence of cereulide in oils is very uncommon, and Nestlé is working with the oil supplier, who is conducting a full root-cause analysis,” the company said.
Nestlé Philippines clarified that only a small number of batches of NAN OPTIPRO and NANKID OPTIPRO products distributed in the country are affected.
“Relevant distributors and retailers holding the identified batches have been notified, and standard instructions issued to block and remove the identified batches from shelves,” the company said.
Consumers may verify whether their purchased products are affected through a dedicated website set up by Nestlé Philippines for real-time checking.
The company stressed that all other Nestlé products and other batches of the same infant formula brands are not included in the voluntary recall.
In a separate statement posted on its official Facebook page, Promil assured consumers that its infant formula products – S-26, S-26 PROMIL and PROMIL – sold in the Philippines are not affected by the contamination risk or the recall.
“We continue to operate under rigorous global quality and safety standards,” Promil said.
The brand, manufactured by Wyeth Nutrition, an affiliate of Nestlé, added that it remains committed to ensuring the safety, quality and proper nutrition needed to support the healthy growth and development of Filipino infants and young children.
