MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has officially assumed ownership of a critical power transmission line in Aklan, which has long been plagued by operational issues.

Following an Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) order, the Caticlan-Unidos 69-kilovolt (kV) line was turned over to NGCP for immediate corrective measures.

The damaged line, formerly managed by the Aklan Electric Cooperative, runs near Caticlan Airport and was reportedly behind the series of power interruptions on Boracay Island earlier this month.

“With the line now under NGCP, we are mobilizing our full technical and financial resources to implement immediate, medium-term and long-term solutions,” the grid operator said in a statement yesterday.

NGCP said it has secured the materials needed for a full reconductoring of the affected transmission line, with completion targeted for March 2026.

It also assured tourists and residents that its teams were working round-the-clock to keep the lights on in the province.

In November 2024, the ERC issued a decision reclassifying the Caticlan-Unidos line from a sub-transmission asset to a transmission facility.

This means once the NGCP’s Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138-kV line is completed, the existing 69-kV line will maintain its transmission function and be transferred to the grid operator.

With an estimated investment of P4.24 billion, the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay line aims to enhance the reliability and stability of power transmission in the area with the construction of a new backbone line.

The project, initiated by the NGCP as early as 2019, is targeted for completion by August 2026.
