MANILA, Philippines — Nine of former lawmaker Zaldy Co’s co-accused have entered not-guilty pleas to graft charges.

Co’s co-accused, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region IV-B Maintenance Division Chief Juliet Calvo and eight other DPWH officials, pleaded not guilty to graft charges before the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division on Tuesday, December 2.

Calvo earlier posted bail amounting to P90,000 for her graft charge.

The Office of the Ombudsman filed the charges against them on November 18. It stemmed from the alleged substandard flood control project implemented by DPWH Region IV-B in the Mag-Asawang Tubig River in Naujan town in Oriental Mindoro.

The project, valued at P289.5 million, was awarded to Sunwest Inc., which is reportedly co-owned by the company.

Seven of the co-accused, including Co, are still at large.

On Monday, December 1, the Philippine National Police said that two of the individuals who have yet to be in custody expressed their intention to surrender.

Law enforcement attempted to arrest three members of the Sunwest board—Consuelo Dayto Adon, Anthony Li Ngo and Noel Yap Cao—at a Pasay City hotel on November 28.

Of the arrested co-accused, seven are detained at the Quezon City Jail, while two, including Calvo, are held at Camp Caringal in Quezon City.
