MANILA, Philippines — The Pasig City police has ruled out foul play in the death of a 15-year-old Grade 9 student, whose body was found in a private compound after she went missing for nearly a week.

Authorities said findings from forensic and backtracking investigations indicate that the girl likely took her own life.

“There was no sign that she was killed or subjected to violence,” Capt. Rodolfo Rabago, team leader for the case, said during a press briefing yesterday.

Investigators traced the teen’s movements prior to her disappearance and found that she had purchased a length of white nylon rope from a hardware store in Marikina City. The same material was later recovered at the scene where her body was discovered, with no indication of struggle or third-party involvement.

The girl was reported missing on March 18 and was last seen leaving a mall in Marikina City.

Maj. Loreto Tigno, Pasig police deputy chief, said the student was later tracked heading toward a dimly lit area near a vacant lot close to the Light Rail Transit Line 2 depot.

A special investigation task group was formed the following day to find the teenager.

After five days of reviewing security footage and gathering statements from family members and acquaintances, police found her body in the same area with a nylon cord around her neck.

Pasig police chief Col. Hendrix Mangaldan said the victim’s family positively identified her remains.

Authorities recovered the girl’s cellphone, personal belongings and several letters addressed to friends. Police are considering a digital forensic examination of her phone to gather more information.
