MANILA, Philippines — An alleged leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter in Baybay, Leyte on Tuesday afternoon.

The remains of Erwin Maceda, alleged vice team leader of the NPA’s Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee, was recovered at the scene of the firefight, which occurred in Barangay Caridad.

Lt. Col. Joseph Sabas, public affairs office chief of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division, said  Maceda’s team had been attempting to regain control of communities that have been freed from rebel influence.

Sabas said the encounter broke out as the troopers were responding to a complaint that armed men were extorting villagers.

The firefight lasted five minutes before the armed men retreated, leaving behind their slain leader.
