MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos might have to register their SIM cards personally as the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) will submit to lawmakers proposed revisions to combat scammers.

Proposed amendments to the SIM Registration Act would require Filipinos to make an in-person appearance for SIM card registration, the NTC said yesterday.

Fraudsters have found ways to circumvent security measures, while telecommunications firms have flagged the proliferation of fake identification cards, the NTC noted.

Telcos have been asking the government to give them access to the database of official IDs to verify applications.

Since 2022, telcos have blocked 3.12 million fraudulent SIM cards and 3.34 billion text scams.

Violators of the SIM Registration Act will face up to six years in prison and fines of up to P300,000.
