CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Up to P4.8 million worth of illegal firecrackers seized in separate police operations in Calabarzon were destroyed at this camp yesterday morning.
Among those seized were 28,296 pieces of firecrackers of different brands, and four boxes of similar items that were classified as more explosive, according to Brig. Gen. Paul Kenneth Lucas, Calabarzon police director.
Lucas and five provincial police chiefs in the region led the destruction of the firecrackers, which was part of safety measures to prevent fatalities during the New Year revelry.
Twelve people including businessmen and retailers were arrested in simultaneous anti-illegal firecracker operations across Calabarzon, Lucas said.
Data from the Calabarzon police showed five people are currently being treated for injuries caused by firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices.
One incident involving illegal discharge of a firearm was also reported.
Col. Vicente Cabatingan, chief of the Calabarzon police intelligence unit, said that the four boxes containing powerful firecrackers known as dart bombs were seized in stings in Cavite and Laguna.
The stings resulted in the arrest of two people.
Cabatingan said that the four boxes of dart bombs were not among those destroyed as these would be presented as pieces of evidence in court.
