MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang is leaving it up to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Office of the Ombudsman to decide which parts of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure’s report on the flood control controversy would be released to the public.

Asked if President Marcos would order the release of the ICI report, Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro yesterday said: “No. First, the ombudsman is an independent body. As for the DOJ... that is up to (their discretion).”

“Out of respect for them, it’s now up to them,” she added.

Critics, including the President’s estranged sister Sen. Imee Marcos, have demanded that Malacañang release the ICI report.

Castro fired back at Imee’s tirades, saying those who criticize corruption should do so consistently.

“We will bring it back to them. There were ghost projects as early as 2020, but no extensive investigation was conducted. Did they make any noise?” Castro asked.

“Who committed a betrayal? Who tricked the people? If someone is really fighting corruption, the criticisms should be consistent, not just during the time of President Marcos, but also during the previous administration,” she pointed out.

On March 31, the ICI ceased operations after declaring the completion of its mandate.

Under Executive Order 94, the ICI is required to submit an accomplishment report on its investigations.

Revilla bail

The Sandiganbayan has started hearing the bail petitions filed by former senator Ramon Revilla Jr. and his co-accused in a malversation case.

Cavite 2nd district Rep. Lani Mercado accompanied her husband at the hearing.

For 10 days, the anti-graft court’s Third Division will hear the bail petitions of defendants involved in an anomalous P92.8-million flood control project in Pandi, Bulacan.

Today’s trial for Revilla’s graft case, wherein he posted bail of P90,000, will be handled by a separate Sandiganbayan division. — Daphne Galvez
