MANILA, Philippines — Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas campaign manager and Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco is trying to divert the issue on the real reason behind the fall of Alyansa candidates when he announced his aspirations for speaker of the House of Representatives, former presidential chief legal counsel Salvador Panelo said yesterday.

In an interview with Bilyonaryo News Channel, Panelo was referring to the recent pronouncements of Tiangco, including his statement where he blamed the initiators of the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte for the poor showing of the alliance’s senatorial candidates.

“Tiangco and I are friends, but he is trying to divert the real reason behind the fall of the Alyansa and the Marcos administration,” Panelo said.

Tiangco noted that some of the pro-administration congressmen were also forced to sign the impeachment against Duterte for fear of not getting funding for their congressional district.

“He (Tiangco) is trying to put the blame on the House of Representatives and on (Speaker) Martin (Romualdez),” Panelo added.

Panelo said that while Tiangco’s claims were partly true, it is President Marcos who should be blamed for the poor showing of the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas candidates.

Tiangco recently confirmed on “Storycon” on One News that several lawmakers brought up the idea of a leadership change at the House.

Asked if he is open to accepting the speakership, Tiangco responded: “Yes.”

Meanwhile, former presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said yesterday that President Marcos should have used other government officials in explaining why the government allowed the Interpol to arrest and turn over former president Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to face crimes against humanity charges.

In an interview on Storycon, Lacierda said that the government’s decision, although right, to surrender Duterte to the Interpol last March is a “very unpopular decision.”
