MANILA, Philippines—Phoenix coach Charles Tiu chose not to cry over spilled milk following the Fuel Masters’ 105-98 loss at the hands of Macau in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

But the defeat carried significant implications.

The loss dropped Phoenix to 6-5, joining the logjam at fifth place along with TNT Tropang 5G, Magnolia Hotshots and San Miguel Beermen.

“[It’s] not really a concern that we are tied [with other teams],” Tiu told Inquirer. “All we know is we have a twice-to-win in the playoffs.”

While the Fuel Masters’ fate is not yet sealed, their chances of cracking the top four remain slim.

Aside from a loss by the Meralco Bolts, who are at 7-3, the Fuel Masters would need Magnolia and TNT to drop their remaining games.

For its part, Phoenix will have to beat San Miguel, which joined the fifth-seed tie after defeating Terrafirma on Saturday.

The Fuel Masters also have to do it without Ricci Rivero, Tiu confirmed.

With the playoff race tightening, Tiu said the team must focus on what it can control—especially after a sluggish showing against Macau.

“We were flat from the start. Macau played well, and they were hot. They’re a good team and much better than their record we knew that entering the game,” Tiu said of Macau, who ended their first PBA conference with a 3-9 card.
