MANILA, Philippines—Japeth Aguilar showed flashes of his vintage form in Game 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals, helping Barangay Ginebra tie the series early at 1-1.
Aguilar had a difficult end to the elimination round after being sidelined due to a lung problem, but delivered in the Gin Kings’ 109-101 win over the Elasto Painters at Mall of Asia Arena on Friday.
Coach Tim Cone acknowledged the veteran’s progress but said he is still working his way back to full conditioning.
“He’s not quite in shape that he used to be in, he’s still feeling his way back,” said Cone.
“Being in the hospital for six or seven days and coming back to play some high-level basketball is really quite difficult but he fought his way through.”
Still easing his way back, Aguilar was only used for 24 minutes but ended up with a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds as a starter.
That’s where Troy Rosario came in, with Cone also praising his bench contribution.
“Thankfully, Troy played really well as well so we can rest Japeth at times, we’re able to rest him some time and give Troy some extra minutes,” Cone said.
Rosario produced 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 27 minutes off the bench.
Ginebra hopes to see Aguilar’s continued recovery in Game 3 on Sunday at the same venue as they try to grab a 2-1 series lead.
