ANTIPOLO—Jaylen Johnson did the heavy lifting for Rain or Shine in its hard-fought win over Barangay Ginebra in Game 1 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals.
Elasto Painters’ coach Yeng Guiao immediately praised Johnson for delivering on the big stage—against one of the PBA’s best imports, no less.
“He stepped up to the moment,” he said of the import. “To be able to stand up and be able to go toe to toe with Justin Brownlee is already a big achievement and we beat them too.”
Brownlee may have one of his all-around nights of 32 points, five rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals, but it was Johnson who ultimately came out on top.

Johnson put up a monster double-double of 40 points and 19 rebounds.
Rain or Shine, though, also drew solid contributions from its locals. Jhonard Clarito had 25 while the young troika of Gian Mamuyac, Adrian Nocum and Mike Malonzo finished with 18, 16 and 12 points, respectively.
More than the numbers, though, Guiao admired Johnson’s willingness to challenge Brownlee, one of the league’s most decorated imports in recent memory.
“It’s just amazing to see that he’s that kind of player,” said Guiao.
The Elasto Painters will try to ride Johnson’s momentum on Friday when they seek a 2-0 lead in Game 2 at Mall of Asia Arena.
