PBA: Kobey Lam still finds way to deliver in Macau win

MANILA, Philippines—Macau sniper Kobey Lam didn’t have the best offensive night in the Giant Pandas’ 96-92 win over Terrafirma in the PBA Governors’ Cup at Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Wednesday.

But when it mattered most, Lam delivered to help Macau escape Terrafirma for its second straight win.

“He (Lam) stayed locked in mentally, unselfish and put on the effort on defense,” said coach Marcus Elliott. “He wasn’t pouting or dropping his head and look what happened. He came up with the game-winning play.”

Tied at 92-all, Lam broke the deadlock with a layup plus the foul off a steal by Jenning Leung with 10.2 seconds remaining.

And while he did miss the bonus free throw, Lam missed the bonus free throw but quickly atoned for it by getting his own miss that led to a pair of crucial freebies by Damian Chong Qui for a 96-92 Macau cushion.

Known as a scorer, Lam was far from his explosive self with just 12 points on just 4-of-9 shooting from the field as Terrafirma successfully limited his touches.

Elliott praised Lam for keeping his focus on the game despite not being able to play his usual game.

“Kobey’s a good teammate so he was staying focused the entire time,” Elliott said.

“Sometimes it’s frustrating if you’re used to be an explosive scorer like Kobey has proven to be but when you guys like Damian (Chong Qui) and (De’Vondre) Perry having nights that they’re having, sometimes it’s going to be like that, you don’t touch it for a few possessions.”

With Lam contained on offense, Chong Qui picked up the slack with 29 points while De’Vondre Perry dominated with a double-double of 34 points and 14 rebounds.
