MANILA, Philippines—San Miguel Beer hit two birds with one stone on Wednesday with a 126-110 drubbing of Terrafirma in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Aside from eliminating the Dyip from playoff contention, the Beermen also joined a four-way logjam for the fifth seed after improving to 6-5. They are caught in a tie with Phoenix, TNT and Magnolia.
“This was a crucial game for us because this would really decide if we enter the playoffs or not,” June Mar Fajardo said. “So it’s a good thing that we executed our game plan perfectly today.”
San Miguel coach Leo Austria lauded his wards for sticking to their game and not crumbling to the pressure of near-elimination.
“A very important game is scary but fortunately, we were focused [enough] to win this game,” he said.
Fajardo scored a conference-high 30 points that went with 16 rebounds. Bennie Boatwright recorded a double-double of with 33 points and 10 boards. The duo of Jericho Cruz and Don Trollano scored 17 each, while CJ Perez had 15.
Mubashar Ali scored 28 points for Dyip, who crashed to a 4-7 record. Jerrick Ahanmisi scored 24 while Geo Chiu finished with 12 while hauling down 16 rebounds.
