The Chinese Coast Guard also turns over the bodies of the two deceased crew members of MV Devon Bay, while search and rescue operations continue for the missing four

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) took custody of 15 Filipino crew members of MV Devon Bay on Sunday, January 25, after the cargo vessel overturned at sea.

The bodies of the two deceased Filipinos were also turned over by the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) at least 168 nautical miles off Taombobong in Pangasinan.

The Chinese embassy on Friday, January 23, confirmed that the crew members were rescued by the CCG after the Singaporean-flagged MV Devon Bay capsized some 55 nautical miles off the China-controlled Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.

The vessel, which was carrying iron ore, was reportedly en route to the southern Chinese city of Yangjiang. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said that it will investigate the incident.

The four missing Filipino crew members are still subject of a continued search and rescue operation, according to PCG Spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab.

The survivors, on board BRP Teresa Magbanua, are set to arrive in Manila in the early morning of Monday, January 26.

The PCG said the coast guard “extends its appreciation to the CCG for the humanitarian assistance and cooperation in ensuring safety of life at sea.” – Rappler.com
